Buxar
The quiet town of Buxar has earned its place in history books because of two famous battles in the country—first fought in 1539 A.D. between Sher Shah Suri and Humayun in nearby Chousa, and the second in 1764, when Mir Kasim stood against Major Hector Monro. Tourists can still walk through this battleground near Katkauli and take a look at a stone memorial erected there. Situated along the banks of the sacred Ganges River, Buxar offers a pleasant surrounding with a number of religious sites for pilgrims, including the famous Brameshwar Nath temple and the Bihariji temple.
Dumraon and Buxar Sadar (in the old district of Bhojpur) are known for their natural beauty. The town comes alive during the festival of Chatth Puja (held twice in the months of March and November) when a number of activities are organized to celebrate the power of the Sun God.
The town of Buxar is perhaps best known for the historical battle between Mir Qasim and the British. Katkauli-ka-Maidan (the grounds of Katkauli) is the exact spot where this battle took place in 1764. The Katkauli grounds are still remarkably preserved for their historical importance. Among Buxar’s most famous tourist spots, Katkauli witnessed the forces of Shuja-Ud-Daulah (Nawab of Awadh), Shah Alam II (Mughal Emperor) and Mir Qasim (Nawab of Bengal) ultimately defeat the British East India Company.
